Description:
Vacheron & Constantin 43mm 15J pocket watch #380288, case #236619, elegant gilt bridge style movement with bold red ruby jewels and a brushed finish, single sunk (SS) porcelain enamel dial with large Arabic numbers with a gold paint filling and black outline, black minute marker outer band and a black-marked subsidiary seconds register is marked "Corps of Engineers Vacheron & Constantin Genève", the gold coloring was likely luminous paint which has since lost its light emitting properties, paint is missing in small spots on some numbers but otherwise the dial is free of hairlines and damage, fancy purple steel open diamond style hands with luminous inserts, the luminous material on the hands is also no longer maintaining its light emitting properties and there is a section of it missing from the arm of the minute hand.
Heavy 0.900 hallmarked Sterling silver hinge back (HB) smooth polish Vacheron & Constantin case with a heavy bow, thick glass crystal and marked on the back cover "Property of Corps of Engineers U.S.A. No. 10538", case is showing normal even wear overall with a few small nicks and dents across the frame and back, it appears that the Sterling silver bow may be a replacement to the watch, there is also a light patina across the case, we can clean & polish the case at no charge on request, however some customers prefer the look of the aged silver and we have only polished the watch with a cloth prior to taking the photographs, measures approx. 51mm diameter x 67mm in length x 13mm thick (crystal included).
Vacheron & Constantin was contracted for these watches from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1918 & 1920 and we encourage reading of the history the Columbus Museum has put together for more details on the history of this watch line. A very high quality and historically interesting triple signed watch from the post WWI era in excellent+ overall condition!
